Where worthwhile things happen
With its redevelopment work making good progress, the Adam Smith Theatre is steadily approaching its grand reopening in 2023. But how will the new version of this old favourite go down with everyone? It’ll be easy to react to its fresh design and decor, but its value will be about more than that. Theatres and other cultural buildings are, after all, far more than the stonework or seats that shape and fill them. They must also be meaningful for and connected to the places they’re located, the people who use them and wider society.
It’s important that they are vibrant venues full of life and action, and that their activities have a bearing on the lives of those taking in performances, as well as those taking part in them. They need to connect with new audiences too, not just those who are already likely to be engaged. Because by using distinctive ideas and approaches, they can renew their communities’ participation. Modern cultural institutions must therefore try to feel not just alive, but relevant as well.

So how is the Adam Smith Theatre’s rejuvenation going to ensure that it is relevant for you? And how will it enhance its ability to meet the needs and wants of our community? For one thing, the diverse nature of the plans mean that it’s going to focus on far more than traditional theatre in future (though that will continue to be a key part of its offering). Listening closely to different community groups and voices in our area – a commitment that’s already occurred and continues to do so – will also be vital.
The vision is to form a new creative hub, a lively place that draws people in to meet and network informally, as well as for official activities. It’s hoped that its programme of events will attract curious visitors and creative types alike, to become a bit of a melting pot for ideas and inspiration. Dynamic working spaces will also be available that can, for example, support start-ups to evolve from their kitchen tables to fully-fledged small enterprises. Of course, nobody can be sure exactly how these aspirations will turn out, but it should be quite a lot of fun finding out.

One response to “Make It Relevant”
Affordable and accessible to as many people as possible. Art is not only for the elite. It needs grassroot participation or it has no substance and in terms of Adam Smith….no relevance in my community.
