Co-creating with our Community

Putting community engagement centre stage

Most of us who visit theatres and shows do so because we want to be entertained in some way. We rely on others – actors, singers, comedians, musicians, production staff and more – to bring the magic, provoke thought and provide a bit of pizzazz. But the rise of community engagement in the arts has changed expectations. It has given those once seen mainly as customers more chances to influence what’s performed.

In other words, they – you – can often get involved and also get creative. It’s a blurring of the line between artists and audiences, in a way which can be very positive. For one thing, venues and their teams are discovering more about the nature, needs and interests of their communities. Because collaboration, or co-creation, means speaking and listening together. And that can lead to fresh ideas and hidden talents.

Getting creative collectively

With the Adam Smith reopening getting ever closer, tapping into our community’s interests and creativity is a real priority. Karen Taylor, OnFife’s Programme Manager, was happy to expand on the theme of welcoming people in to take part in things. “We’re hoping to have open-mic evenings and to support amateur and local organisations with the hire of our spaces. It could be for drama, dance or music groups, bridge nights or yoga classes.”

“We also used to host a children’s drama course – the Adam Smith Summer Theatre Workshop. It was very popular and ran for a few years, so activities like that have already proved their worth. But the refurbishment of the building is just looking fantastic. I think it’ll open up lots of opportunities and interesting thoughts for people.” It certainly sounds like the stage is being set for some exciting times in our corner of Scotland.

Are you keen on co-creation?

Co-creation is all about connection and community. It means including and enabling different voices and insights, to contribute to what happens at our venue. So if sharing your opinions – and even joining our creative journeys – sounds good, your next opportunity is nearly here. We will be hosting several creative workshops in the coming weeks/months. Watch this space for more details soon!
