Encore

Same again, please

Have you ever been at a concert or show and shouted ‘encore’ at the end, in the hope of further entertainment? If it was a music gig, you may have heard the equivalent cry of ‘one more tune’. It’s a simple request, really. An extra bit of performance. A repeated song. A wee slice of the same again. All to enjoy some special feeling for a little while longer.

It’s a theme that we’ve been thinking about recently, as excitement builds about the return of the Adam Smith Theatre. What does our audience want more of? What’s gone down a treat in the past and deserves to be brought back? Well, there are various types of shows and past successes which could be reappearing in Kirkcaldy, real soon.

National events and local talent

National Theatre Live broadcasts have been a big hit with UK audiences in recent years. Their outings at the Adam Smith Theatre were no exception. Offering large-scale productions to local audiences at an affordable price, they provide a pleasing blend of cinema and theatre. And with new shows set to be screened in the refurbished main auditorium, these immersive events should prove popular once more.

Local theatrical organisations, many of whom the theatre has close relationships with, will get the chance to shine again too. From Gilbert and Sullivan societies to operatic and musical groups, once our doors open again we’ll welcome back various performers from our neck of the woods. While church halls and other small venues are great, but it’s nice to take to a real theatre stage when you get the chance.

The return of pantos and plays

Of course, no account of annual theatre hits would be complete without mentioning panto! After three years’ absence due to a combination of Covid-19 and the renovation works, panto season will be back here in 2023. We know it’s been a big miss, but we think this year’s show – The Little Mermaid – should make up for it. And if first week sales are anything to go by, it’s going to be another festive favourite. Oh yes it is!

Finally, things will soon take a dramatic turn again. Because our all-new venue will naturally host a fresh selection of drama productions too. We know that Kirkcaldy folk love a good play, with our theatre affording great views of its stage from all angles. And with the National Theatre of Scotland’s Moorcroft show already booked in October, for one, we hope that we’re all set to come back with a bang!
